Miranda…
I was always the life of the party, the happy one.
Until Preston killed my soul.
When he came into my life, he destroyed me. I was a shell of my former self, pretending to be fine while wishing I wouldn’t wake up the next day. I never dreamed my best friend would come back into my life…and bring Brad Nicholson with her.
I never dreamed the homicide detective with the cocky attitude could show me my worth again. He could show me that my life could be amazing every day.
Until the day he found out about my past with Preston. Then, I was sure he’d see the real Miranda and ditch me for good.

Brad…
From a young age, I made a decision.
I knew what I wanted to do with my life and from that point on, my work molded me. Everything became routine. Casual. Until Mackenzie walked into my life, bringing her best friend, Miranda, with her.
From the first moment I saw Miranda, I knew she could be someone special. I didn’t have time for relationships, but she was different. She was a piece of the puzzle that could be missing. But she was broken, I could see that. And all I wanted to do was turn her into the girl I knew she really was beneath her perfectly placed mask.

tina thoughts a review for youChasing Each Other was a story of two souls finding their way to each other. It had drama, romance, passion, and a dose of reality thrown in. I enjoyed this story overall. In my opinion, it was a bit short, but that is probably because I had been reading monster books lately. I finished it pretty quickly and left satisfied. I do wish there had been a few more areas of the story expanded on but that is just me loving the little details that maybe someone else won’t. This story delves into who Miranda and Brad are as individuals, giving glimpses into their present and past, while weaving a story of two lost souls together. Miranda has lived through a hell that many can relate to. I feel like Rivera did a good job of showing the mental affects and struggle of someone who has left a terrible abusive relationship and addiction. I appreciated that her reality with addiction was portrayed in such a way that there is no miracle fix. She is constantly battling the want to use and the want to be free. Brad is a man who has seen the horrors of the world and lives with the scars. He fights for justice and peace. I admired his reality and his honesty. His attraction to Miranda is one that cannot be ignored. He is drawn to her sadness, wanting to save her from whatever she fears. I feel like these two, despite their age difference and life experiences are two old souls. They connect, feeling a blossoming love and affection that leads to a deep friendship and hopes for a future.

There is a major plot point that happens with Miranda, a haunting from her past that she cannot shake. When the climactic point hits, I was expecting more. When I took a step back I realized that this is a realistic life situation. So many times in New Adult books, there is such a huge climactic point that is over-dramatized and crazy.  Most times it works with the plot so you think wow, that was huge. With this story, the climactic point makes sense with what was happening. So much of the insecurities and struggles with Miranda are internal. The past few years were brutal to her and in her mind the world would end if her secrets were revealed. The ebb and flow of the drama allowed her to understand that her problems and insecurities were valid but something she could overcome with her friends, family, and support.

The message of this story allows for an authentic view of addiction and self-loathing. Miranda has the weight of the world on her shoulders and when she realizes that her secrets are better shared, she learns to fight hard alongside those that she loves. Watching her struggle is hard but it is real. Addiction is not a switch to turn off but a lifetime of choices. I feel like Rivera showed that wonderfully in this book. I am excited for more from this series, hopefully with glimpses of Miranda and Brad. I am excited to have a glance into their HEA!

excerpt alertThe door slowly opened and my heart stuttered. Brad slowly crept into my room, locking eyes with me. What in the hell is he doing here? The urge to slap the shit out of him was strong, but I somehow refrained.
“Um, hi,” he whispered, sounding nervous. Too shocked and confused, I just stared at him.
“Can I come in?”
I nodded and sat up further on my bed. “What…what are you doing here?” I asked, finally finding my words.
He walked to the foot of the bed and sat down on the side. Handing me a bag, he said, “I hope you don’t mind your roommate letting me in. It’s your birthday and I wanted to give you your gift.”
“Give me a gift?” I questioned.
“Yeah.” He glanced at his watch. “I was afraid I’d miss it, but I still have fifteen minutes.”
I cocked my head to the side. Did he really think he could go out and pick up some whore and then…I couldn’t even bring myself to think it.
“I had to work tonight. I came over here as soon as I got off.” I’m sure he got off all right.
“You are such a liar.” I scoffed and shook my head. “I don’t know why you are here, but you can go.”
“I understand why you’re mad. And I deserve that, but I’ve never lied to you, Miranda.”
