I don’t think that Lia Riley can write anything that I will not love. At least that has been the matter of course for her stories and this book has been my favorite thus far of anything she has ever written. These characters, the storyline, and the overall premise was an incredible tale of love, second chances in life, and finding a purpose to live that life to the fullest measure. It didn’t hurt that BEST WORST MISTAKE also had a hint of Beauty and the Beast, my favorite childhood story! Add all these components into one and you have a sure fire way of making me ignore all responsibility till I reach the last word.
When I started reading this story, to say I was intrigued would be putting it mildly. I was antsy waiting to meet the illusive Archer brother that has been shrouded in mystery for the whole series so far. He is alluded to but there isn’t much known about him. When this book begins, we are bombarded with all things Wilder and it made my heart race. This man was perfection to me. He was rough around the edges, living for the next adventure. His career of smoke jumping is a profession equally dangerous and sexy. He lives to save lives and the thrill is an added bonus. After things come crashing down and his reality has been shifted to something heart wrenching and unexpected, we see a man that looses his spark for life. He is angry, grumpy, and just plain miserable, a fact he makes know to the world around him through his isolation and snarly attitude.
Enter Quinn Higsby. This girl was spot on. She is the quirky, book loving heroine of her own story. I loved this girl and any book nerd would see part of themselves reflected in this character. She has the weight of the world on her shoulders but she strives to keep a can do attitude in her life, despite the desperation that constantly battles for her soul. I loved her attitude. She is the person who can snap Wilder from his self-loafing island and she gives as much as she can take. Her spunky and feisty personality is his saving grace and together they work in a way that should never make sense but is shining with a rightness that cannot be denied.
This book is my favorite not only because of the illusion to my childhood obsession, but also because it is a solid story that has a flair of something different. Each book in the Brighwater series has its own unique spark that captures your attention. This one has a thread of suspense, something that adds to the romantic story and gives you a little tangent to chase. The small town life is exemplified in this tale and the chaos that erupts is nothing short of tragic and exhilarating for a small town. The gossips are on high alert and the danger levels are heightened. Quinn and Wilder’s romance is enhanced by what is happening around them and the mysterious fires that continue to pop up. The mystery, coupled with a sweet and passionate love story, makes for a story that you will not want to miss. Lia’s stories just keep getting better and better. I cannot wait to see how she tops this one. I am hoping for more from this series, maybe a little bit about a certain cousin and small town diva. Fingers crossed! Time will tell but this series has a very special place on my bookshelf and it is not something you should miss!
It had been a while since he’d been in the company of any woman who wasn’t a medical professional or intimately involved with his brothers. Also, as much as he didn’t want to admit it, he had a type and this forward, strong-looking woman fit it right down to that thick wavy brown hair pulled back at the nape of her long sexy neck.
Necks were underrated female geography. He loved how they tasted when he kissed them there, how they smelled as he nuzzled.
Equally fascinating was her lush mouth, how the corner remained quirked on one side despite the natural pout, as if in perpetual secret amusement.
This woman was bright, spunky, and happy, despite her father’s miserable situation. His heart sank. He had nothing to offer someone like her, not when his whole world had burned to a cinder.
He shook himself inwardly, not moving a muscle. No point succumbing to the ugly truth, however true. Maybe he could pretend to be a normal guy for the night. Normal except for the scars, the missing leg, and the fact he hadn’t spoken to a living soul since Sawyer dropped off his groceries six days ago, and was tongue-tied around strangers at the best of times.
Shit.
What would Archer do? His younger brother was good with people, especially the ladies. He’d navigate this situation like a pro.
She gave him a tentative smile, probably because he was staring at her like a loon.
Compliments. Women like compliments.
“Your teeth are real white,” Wilder blurted. Goddamn it, the words hung over them like a comic strip balloon. He wished for a string to grab on to, so he could stuff the idiocy back into his mouth, swallow it down.
“Excuse me?” Her shoulders jerked as her lips clamped, clearly not anticipating the awkward flattery.
At least he hadn’t said how much he liked her neck. Yet.
Damn, this was a mistake. He wasn’t good with people. Didn’t like people. Didn’t need people.
