Synopsis
She wants a summer job and a ride to a wedding.
He wants an assistant and a distraction from the mess his life had become.
They didn’t know they needed each other.
Avery Emili needs two grand. Two grand and a plane ticket–her sister is counting on her to get to Jamaica for her wedding. But the semester is over, and tutoring college freshman and high school students has dried up until the fall.
Atticus Grimes needs help–the messy split with his wife left the twenty-eight year old professor scrambling to keep things together as the semester winds down. Now he’s got a research grant he has to actually do research for and all he wants to do is drown himself in a tall bottle of bourbon.
When Avery sees his ad for an assistant, all she’s thinking is a summer job. But as they spend time together, in the office and out, both of them begin to realize something is there. Something that can’t happen–he’s a professor and she’s a student. And both of them have histories, pasts that won’t let go. Can two broken people pulled apart by expectations find a way to be whole?
Lynne’s Thoughts
Having never heard of the Branton University series, I was very excited to start This Love. I mean, the hero’s first name is from a Harper Lee novel that happens to be my favorite so it was destined to be great! I really enjoyed this novel. It was your basic teacher and student plot line. However, the novel was set in a college setting so the age gap felt less inappropriate and more annoying. I mean undergrad versus post-grad isn’t even that big. Which meant that the big “drama” that our couple faced was really just infuriating rather than devastating. I loved Avery, she was strong, funny, and just a really likable character. Her choices never seemed too dramatic or far-fetched from what an everyday person would do. Her past was a big defining factor for her choices and validly so. I really found myself wanting to help her out and solve her problems with Atticus because they were just an extremely likable couple. One of the biggest reasons the couple was so likable was because Atticus is a total babe. He’s all geeky, bad-boy swagger. Most people can’t pull that off, but he really seems to. In addition to being smart and hot, he really is a super kind man. He treats Avery well, he fights for her and his family. He made some poor choices throughout the entire novel but ultimately I found myself rooting for him. Overall, I thought this book was a great read. Some of the plot was predictable but I loved seeing a glimpse into the next novel’s characters. If you’re looking for a sweet and slightly steamy teacher-student romance, you’ll wanna read this book!
