He shook his head but didn’t release me. “You don’t deserve this.”
“Hey. Stop that.” I pulled back and forced him to look at me. Cupping his cheeks, I narrowed my eyes on him. “You don’t deserve this. You went there because you were trying to make life better for us. For me. If anything, this is all my fault. If we hadn’t met, and you hadn’t loved me, you never would have taken this job.” My voice cracked. “Anything you’re going through right now, it’s on me. Not you.”
He shook his head frantically. “This isn’t your fault. It’s mine. I lived. They died.” He stared off into the distance. “They all died in front of me. I saw it happen. They all just died. Why did I live? Why me?”
I swallowed back a sob. He looked so lost. “Because I need you.”
“I need you too.” He seemed to snap back into reality. He turned to me and his face softened a fraction. “So damn much, but it’s not fair.None of this is fair.”
Was it not fair that he needed me, or was he saying it wasn’t fair he was still alive? I wasn’t sure, and I wasn’t sure I really wanted to find out. “I know it’s not.”
“I can’t do this to you,” he repeated. “I won’t do it. I won’t ruin you. I won’t take you down with me.”
His words filled me with fear. It was as if he was telling me he was leaving. We’d promised to love each other forever. He couldn’t leave. I gripped him even tighter. “Stop talking like that. You’re scaring me.”
“You should be fucking scared of me.” He laughed harshly. “Look at me.”
“I am looking at you.” I leaned in and kissed him gently, even though my fingers ached to slap him until he stopped talking nonsense. “I’m always looking at you. You’re gorgeous, brave, kind, and loving. You’re Finn, and I love you just the way you are. Forever, no matter what.”

Reaching for sunlight…
Finn survived the ambush and came home to me, but in his head, the battle is still raging. He’s falling apart and I’m trying my best to pick up the pieces of him, to find the us we used to be. I love him as much as I ever did, but love isn’t enough to fix this. I thought telling my father about our relationship would be the hardest thing we’d ever have to face. I was wrong.
Lost in shadows…
All I wanted was to be worthy of Carrie. One mission, just one, and I’d be able to give her the future she deserved. Then everything went wrong, leaving me tainted and broken. Carrie wants me to be who I was, but all that’s left is what they made of me. I’m no good for her. No good for anyone like this. I have to figure out how to move forward. Alone.
Sometimes love isn’t enough…

Tina’s Thoughts…
(If you haven’t read Out of Time (Book#2) then this will contain spoilers from book #2 and you should read it, duh!)
I don’t know if there could have been a more perfect ending to this series. It was a gut wrenching ride for sure but that made the ending so much sweeter and more perfect. My heart broke for Finn over and over. All he wanted was to better himself for Carrie’s parents and it backfired in more ways than one. When Finn took his protection detail mission in the second book, I knew that something horrible was on the horizon. When the IED hit and he was hurt, it squeezed my heart to pieces. Out of Mind opens up with Finn dealing with some major PTSD and survivors guilt as a result of what happened to him. It is a completely logical response to what has transpired and the men he lost. One of the best parts about this book is that it deals with a real and pressing issue, in such a way that it is heartbreaking, showing that there are real consequences and pain but also real solutions and healing. Carrie does everything within her power to help him heal and move on but Finn’s state of mind causes him to lash out and hurt those he loves. Watching them fight and Finn break apart was tragic to say the least.
Having this story in dual POVs was the perfect way to write this story. It allows the reader to better understand what Finn is dealing with and his thought processes, no matter how frustratingly untrue. It allows the reader to see his “logic” and reasoning behind his decisions. Reading from Carrie’s POV allowed the reader to see the heartbreak of someone who cannot help the one that she loves above all others. Her frustration and desperation was tangible. Her doubts and fears fueled her to take action. In the end, their decisions allowed them to find peace within themselves and come together in such a way that brought healing and wholeness.
I could go on and on but I don’t want to spoil a second of this book! Grab some tissues and get to reading. The emotion and pain created a platform for such a powerful and complete ending that, in my opinion, was the best way to end the story. Well done Jen McLaughlin. I applaud you! Carrie and Finn are wonderful characters and their story is perfect!
