And the hits just keep on coming!! This book sets the mark for the other books to come in the Hard Ink Series. It is sexy, action packed and fantastic. Emilie and Derek’s story has taken over the top spot as my favorites Hard Ink couple and I swooned over every minute!
This book picks up immediately in the series as the team is still continuing the put together details and attempt to decode the chip. Their prime suspect and lead at the moment is Manny Garza, a man they met while on active duty and a suspected key to the answers they need. He is a ghost and tracking him down is easier said than done. From the intel they gather, they find a way to learn more about him- through his sister Emilie. When Derek (aka Marz) is tasked with helping to distract her while the guys search her place, something sparks hot and bright between them. After a couple of dates, they begin to connect even more and Derek decides that the truth is the only option if he is to salvage their budding relationship. However situations explode and Emilie is thrust first hand into the world at Hard Ink, attempting to survive and understand the chaos around her, while dealing with the lies and betrayal of Derek.
This storyline was fast paced and suspenseful. Outside of the primary romance between Emilie and Derek, we are the plot begin to twist and explode. The team is starting to see breakthrough in their investigation. Some of it leads to even more questions than answers but they finally have a concrete lead to follow, turning preconceived notions to dust and marking new enemies. They have to reevaluate what they know and attempt to backtrack to understand the truth of what happened all those years ago. The adrenaline laced suspenseful story is more intense than before and I cannot wait to see where all these facts lead.
The primary focus of this story is the romance that blossoms between Emilie and Derek. Derek was always one of my favorite guys. His humor and laughter always made me smile on the books before. His intelligence is sexy and his honesty and sincerity is heart felt. He lost the most in Afghanistan and lives with the daily reminder of what happened. His team still walks on egg shells around him despite his openness about his prosthetic leg and injury. The team’s guilt and emotions are always at the surface and Derek continually attempts to rid that guilt from their lives. When seeing him in the first 4 installments I could not wait to learn more about his character and what lies beneath the surface. This book displays the after affects of war in a different light than those before. Whereas each boos displays a different aspect of the solider returning home and his demons to face, we see a new aspect that just reiterates what our warriors face and the respect and love they deserve.
When Derek is tasked with learning more about Emilie, he never expects what he finds. Emilie is a smart, loving, beautiful family oriented woman. She has been hurt deeply by her ex but she has picked up the pieces and been made stronger for it. Her heart is good and she longs to help people work through their inner turmoil and come out better and braver for it. When Derek and Emilie begin to hit it off, the chemistry and passion is incredibly hot. It was like “HOLY CANOLI, ring the fire alarm and step back lest you catch fire too.”
Hard To Come By is, in my opinion, the best one in the series so far. The action and suspense will leave you on the edge of your seat. The passion and romance between Derek and Emilie will leave your heart pounding and your lungs breathless. Laura Kaye truly delivers in this new installment of the Hard Ink series, giving us what we have come to expect and oh so much more! I cannot wait to see who is next and how the plot unfolds!
