Chaos
Mayhem #3
Jamie Shaw
Genre: RockStar Romance
Publication Date: July 21, 2015
Published by Avon Impulse
From the moment she saw Shawn Scarlett perform at a school talent show, Kit Larson has loved two things: the guitar, and the gorgeous, green-eyed boy who inspired her to play. But one careless night in high school shatters her hope of ever being more than a notch on his bedpost.
Six years, two bands, and one mostly-mended heart later, Kit’s about to make her rock star dreams a reality as the new guitarist for Shawn’s band, The Last Ones to Know. He may not remember their reckless night together, but Kit has never forgotten… and she’s determined to make him eat his heart out.
The release of their new album means a month cooped up on a tour bus, sleeping inches away from the ridiculously sexy musician she’s never quite gotten over. And as Kit gets to know the real Shawn—not Shawn Scarlett, the rock god, the player—their attraction becomes too hot to resist. But the past is paved with secrets, and when they finally surface, Kit could lose everything: the band, the music, her dreams… and Shawn.

Chaos… Where do I even begin? If I had to choose a favorite RockStar Romance this would definitely be in the running, right up next to Kylie Scott’s Stage Dive Series, for my favorite. This book is an incredible blend of romance, life, rock’n’roll, and following your dreams. My only regret is that I read this book first and not in the order they were written. That fact proves that you can read it as a standalone but I wish that I had been in Jamie Shaw’s head and seen the story progress as she imagined. Chaos is a story that will suck you in and give you a story to tell your friends about. There is passion, defiance, drama, and family all woven together with a flair that only a RockStar story can truly convey.
I am a sucker for second chance stories. The fact that there is history and a level of chemistry between the two main characters adds a depth and connection to the story. This story begins in the past with a girl who is inspired by a boy with a guitar and her advances to make him see her. One thing leads to another and she is left heartbroken attempting to pick up the pieces after one night and find herself in the chaos. Fast forward years later and we see a new spunky guitar player, Kit, who is determined to find her dream, follow it, and hold tight. She has a chance to audition for one of the best bands, the only problem is that this band is the one that is home to the green eyed boy, Shawn, who left her broken. This was an incredible beginning to the book that hooked me and the potential for drama and a real story was delivered on a silver platter!
Shawn is the rocker that has seen it all and wants something more. He is a RockStar that stands out among the rest. He is talented and his heart is in his music and playing that music. Throughout the story he swings back and forth from a sweet guy to an intense and sometimes overwhelming character (in the best way). Kit is a feisty and talented a woman, hell bent on making her way and ignoring the past. I loved Kit’s character. She was still young and learning how to approach life but at the same time sure of who she was and brimming with potential and personality. When Shawn and Kit are together there is no shortage of action. There is hostility, there is drama, there is romance, and there is comradery. They go through every stage of a relationship and attempt to find a balance. I loved the constant give and take. This story had every possibility of being over the top dramatic but Jamie Shaw makes it work flawlessly. The drama is necessary to the story and it is never for the sake of drama.
The band itself is fantastic. There are personalities galore that add a certain flair to an already wonderful story. The friendships in this story add stability to the characters and relationships. I loved Kit’s family and her overbearing brothers. I loved the family that has been created by the band and how Kit was enveloped in their unit. The secondary characters and themes created such a well-rounded story, which, in my opinion, is one of the reasons this story is so great. The main focus is on Kit and Shawn but the fact that they would never be there without the important people in their lives supporting them is an important theme that adds so much to this story.
The romance was perfect in the boundaries of the story. I love how their friendship was natural and the romance came next. I loved how they were drawn to each other after all these years. When secrets come out it is harsh and heartbreaking but the way the Jamie brings those broken pieces back together allows for the readers to see a beautiful and lasting chance! Needless to say I will be diving into the first two books in the series all the while scolding myself for missing them before! I am excited to see where the series leads and to see more of this incredible cast of characters.
“Kit,” Kale complains, and I stop walking. At the top of the stairs, I turn and face him.
“Kale, you know this is what I want to do with my life. I’ve wanted to be in a big-name band since middle school. And Shawn is an amazing guitarist. And so is Joel. And Adam is an amazing singer, and Mike is an amazing drummer . . . This is my chance to be amazing. Can’t you just be supportive?”
My twin braces his hands on my shoulders, and I have to wonder if it’s to comfort me or because he’s considering pushing me down the stairs. “You know I support you,” he says. “Just . . .” He twists his lip between his teeth, chewing it cherry red before releasing it. “Do you have to be amazing with him? He’s an asshole.”
It’s not like I can’t understand why Kale is worried. He knew how much I liked Shawn before that party, and that night, he squeezed every last detail out of me. He knew I gave Shawn my virginity, so he knew why I cried myself to sleep for the next few weeks when Shawn never called.
“Maybe he’s a different person now,” I reason, but Kale’s dark eyes remain skeptical as ever.
“Maybe he’s not.”
“Even if he isn’t, I’m a different person now. I’m not the same nerd I was in high school.”
I start down the stairs, but Kale stays on my heels, yapping at me like a nippy dog. “You’re wearing the same boots.”
“These boots are killer,” I say—which should be obvious, but apparently needs to be said.
“Just do me a favor?”
At the front door, I turn around and begin backing onto the porch. “What favor?”
“If he hurts you again, use those boots to get revenge where it counts.”
I laugh and take a big step forward to squeeze my brother in a hug. “Promise. Love you, Kale. I’ll call you when it’s over.”
With a big sigh, he hugs me back. And then he lets me go.
