Storms Over Secrets
Over #3
J.A. DeRouen
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: September 14, 2015
Promises are lies dressed up for the party.
Secrets poison the fairest of fairy tales.
Lies stain the purest of loves.
I’ve paid the ultimate price for my choices. The tendrils of those sins bind me to my past. The remnants of my love hold me captive.
Then he walks into my life, and makes me believe in second chances. He awakens feelings in me I know I shouldn’t have. I yearn for a future without guilt. With him, I dream of a love untainted.
Regret is a far-reaching emotion. It barrels through time like a blazing comet, and its path isn’t always straight. No matter what I feel, I cannot bring myself to regret the time I’ve spent with Cain.
But it doesn’t mean I can have him.
My name is Celia Lemaire and this is my story of broken promises.
Storms Over Secrets is the third book in The Over Series, a group of interconnected standalone novels.

J.A. is killing it with her Over Series. It keeps getting better and better. Storms Over Secrets is a testament to that fact. This story is full of highs and lows, love, passion, and tragedy. This book dives into a world that will take some pretty heavy issues and present them in a way that is powerful and plausible. Celia and Cain are two people who find exactly what they long for in each other. There are moments of hesitation, moments of hope, moments of love, and moments of pain. These two are perfect for each other, but sometimes that fact isn’t enough. For the majority of the story, I knew these two were meant to make it in the long haul but timing was always off. Celia loved him but her past dictated her future. Cain took what she said to heart and the separation was gut wrenching.
Celia is such a well written raw and authentic character. She is a woman who knows loss and heart ache. She experienced more than anyone should at a young age and those experiences shaped who she is. She is cautious and a thinker. She watches the world pass her by, separated from what she sees. She has experienced some good in her life but there is so much overwhelming sadness. Celia has such an incredibly big heart. Her capacity to love and care for those around her is overwhelming in the best possible way. She is distracted by her past in such a way that she almost lost her future. Watching her evolve in this story was beautiful and at times tragic. She is my favorite female character from J.A. hands down. When you understand who she is and what happened to her, you cannot help but admire her tenacity. She is a fighter and I loved watching her learn when to fight and when to embrace the change.
Cain is the perfect companion to Celia. He is strong, loyal, passionate, and kind. He fills the holes in Celia and gives her confidence to hope for something, even if she thinks she will never have it. This man is fabulous. His love for family is beautiful. His passion for his job is admirable. He is a man of action. I loved watching him pursue Celia. It was so sweet and many times tragic to see. His love for her is enough to bridge the gap if only she would let him. At times I really did wonder if these two were going to get out of their heads and make this work. There is so much give and take till there is nothing left anymore. The emotion that develops between these two is strong. There is a connection that cannot be broken and something that could change everything they know if they would let it be.
This book has a fantastic flow and such great writing. There are chapters in the present and in the past. I loved seeing how Celia grew up and what her life was like. It was sad to see what happened to her at such a young age but so wonderful to see how she has grown from it. As the story progresses and things begin to click into place, I was so grateful for the dual POVs. There is time together but also time apart with these two and seeing the world through their eyes is important. It allowed for them to determine who they are and what they want in life. The emotion was spot on. The passion was scorching. You cannot help but feel deeply when you read this book.
I am excited to see what is next in the series. These stories and characters keep getting better and better. I don’t know how J.A. is going to top this one but I am excited to see where she leads. Cain and Celia have a story that is filled with love, hope, heartache, and second chances. When they learn to dance in the rain instead of hiding from the storm, it is something worth every ounce of emotion you expel. You heart will be content. Don’t miss this beautiful story of love and life! Prologue… Celia
The Past –Six Years Ago
MY FEET POUND the pavement at a punishing pace, and my calves scream as I push myself forward, not going nearly fast enough. My ragged breath whistles into the night as I force air into my restricted lungs. Loose gravel and rocks bruise the bottoms of my feet, but none of that matters.
Please, God, this can’t be the end. I need more time to fix this … more time to fix him.
I pound my fists on the front door, twisting the doorknob and pushing on the splintered wood with all my might.
“Lucas! God, please! Lucas!” My screams pierce through the stillness of the night, and the neighborhood awakens like falling dominos, with porch lights illuminating one after the other.
It feels as though light-years pass before the light above my head flicks to life. Mrs. Cindy opens the door with sleepy eyes and disheveled hair. “My God, Celia, what on Earth?”
There’s no time for words as I shove her aside and race up the staircase. Sobbing. Stumbling. Clawing to get to him.
A boulder settles in my gut, the gnawing dread pulls me under, making it almost impossible to breathe. His text is etched in my brain, tattooed on my already broken heart, because I know what I’ll find when I finally reach him.
No matter where I am, I’ll always love you. I promise you always.
His vow is the only coherent thought I have as I fling open the bathroom door and fall to my knees, sliding on the pool of blood that welcomes me.
“Noooooooooooooooooo!”
