This book is wonderful. Beyond What is Given took everything I had to give and gave me back so much more! I read this book in one sitting. It was a monster but every time I would go to put it down I would make an excuse to keep reading. Before I knew it, Sunday afternoon was over and it was night time and I hit the end. I got lost in the passion and memories of this story. Grayson and Sam’s story was full of ups and downs. It was brimming with dreams, hopes, remembrance, and passion. This book is an incredible addition to the Fight and Flight series. I am excited to see how Rebecca tops this book because this one has left me breathless and smiling for days!Beyond What is Given is a story of living in the moment, while still clinging to the past. In essence, it makes it hard to look towards the future. Grayson and Sam are two characters who have so much baggage, past chains that most of the people around them have no clue about. I loved watching these two characters grow from page one to the end. They learn so much about who they are and what they want. Grayson changes so much from who he was in the begining. Seeing him in the last book and how he grew into his future in this book was spot on. You finally understand his attitude and his dedication. When we learn the secrets of Grayson, you fall in love with his loyalty, dedication, and strength. He is the whole package, one that Sam cannot ignore. Sam is running form her past and learning to stand on her own two feet. She has made mistakes that seem to haunt her at every turn. Her tenacity and determination to rise above is admirable. She is feisty, strong willed, and a beautiful soul.
These two main characters are like a moth to the flame. They cannot stay away from each other. It is almost like they find meaning, purpose, and hope in what is growing between them. This is a beautiful romance is full of passion, one that will make you sigh and cry. The romance of this story is key to healing and hope, but it is not the only thing you need to read this book for. Grayson and Sam start as two people who are resilient, but that resilient nature morphs into something life altering. They no longer function in survival mode. Instead they learn to embrace their life and choices, finding confidence in who they are and embracing the life they love. The romance is a main theme but the transformation of these two main characters individually adds something beautifully profound to the mix. The love blooming between these two allows for a safe place of healing and expectation for more.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but the things these two are running from are pretty big. Reading this book in dual POVs allows the reader to understand the reactions of our two main characters. You being to understand who they are and what they are dealing with, something that most of their loved ones and friends aren’t privy to. This aspect of the book allows us to grasp the transformation of Grayson and Sam. It shows us how far they come and the decisions they made to get there. It displays the good, the bad, and the ugly of their journey, making them more endearing to the reader. The community, friendships, and family that are woven in throughout this story are spot on and important. I loved watching the different dynamics and how they played out. It goes a long way into helping the reader piece together the story in a way that is like icing on the cake. I loved the military theme and the comradery of the flyboys. Every element of the story is woven throughout in such a way that is it becomes a rich story of life, love, and healing.
Rebecca Yarros is a skilled master of words. She evokes so much passion and emotion from what she writes. There were times when I was overcome by what I was reading and feeling. There is no shortage of powerful feeling in this story. At times is makes you smile and at times you hold back tears. I was on the edge of my seat for a while, wondering if things would work out in the end. This book was phenomenal and it makes me wonder how Rebecca will be able to top it. I have no doubt she can, and that is something I am definitely looking forward to!
I shrieked as the mixer whirred a shrill pitch and batter exploded, hitting the walls, the cabinets, my face…everything. I sputtered as some landed in my mouth, and slammed my hand against the lever to turn it off. This was going to be a bitch to clean up.
“Are you okay?” Grayson ran in, hair damp from the shower. His eyes widened as he took in the state of his precious kitchen. “You weren’t kidding about the mess.”
“Oh this?” I smiled. “It’s a new aeration technique. I totally meant to do this.” My awesome excuse died as a glob of brownie mix fell off the tip of my nose.
“Is that so?” he asked, walking over to me slowly, consuming my vision. My breath hitched as he swiped his finger across my cheek, and then licked the brownie mix off the digit. Holy hot. “Hmm… I think there’s something to be said for this method. Maybe a little more air in the batter?”
My mouth popped open. “Are you making fun of me?”
He smirked, which must have had a direct link to my panties, because they unanimously voted to drop. Now. There was sexy, and there was Grayson’s tongue sweeping across his lower lip, which was a step beyond hedonistic. His eyes took on a mischievous glint but kept the same signature intensity that held me captive, unable to look anywhere else as he lowered his face toward mine. What…what was he
doing?
Do you even care? Nope. Not one bit.
“Maybe another taste to be sure?” he asked, his voice low as his lips skimmed across my jawline. “Mmm. Definitely more.” Shivers coursed down my body. Holy shit. His mouth was actually on me, and I was awake.
He flipped the switch on the mixer and chocolate flew.
“You did not!” I let my knees buckle so I slipped to the floor, leaving Grayson to be splattered by the flying confection.
“I most certainly did!” He lifted me up like I weighed nothing, and batter smacked the back of my tank top. “Man, you’re slippery.” He mock-dropped me.
I yelped, locking my ankles around his waist and my hands around his neck. He turned off the mixer and chuckled low in his throat. “You can laugh?” I asked, yanking my head back to look at him.
“I have been known to on occasion,” he answered, that stupid, crazy-sexy smirk in play despite the chocolate on his cheeks and forehead. How the hell could someone look so hot while literally dripping brownie batter?
“I like it,” I admitted.
His smirk disappeared, and his grip tightened on my bare thighs as his gaze dropped to my lips. They parted as if he’d freaking asked them to. We weren’t just stepping out of the friend-zone here, we were on a damn missile into let- me-jump-you-ville.
“I do, too,” he whispered.
