There once was a boy, and I loved him.
Logan Francis Silverstone was the complete opposite of me. I danced while he stood still. He was quiet, and I was always running my mouth. He struggled to find a smile while I refused to frown.
The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn’t look away.
We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.
Until the day I lost him. I threw us away with one hasty decision—a decision that changed us forever.
There once was a boy, and I loved him.
And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

Brittainy does it again. This book is perfectly named: The Fire Between High and Lo. It is a passionate and all consuming story of the highs and lows of the life and love between Logan and Alyssa. It may seem like it dwindles away but the embers of the fire can never truly be snuffed out. It is not always pretty. It is raw and has the ability to hurt those around them. In true Brittainy fashion, you are sucked into a world of passion, drama, angst, and humanity. When I read this book, I kept wondering what condition my poor heart who be in when I was done. It seemed like every high and happy moment was followed by several of the lowest and saddest moments. It seems that every time you take a step forward towards a future that is brighter, you are dragged back into the hurt and chaos. It sounds like it could be overwhelming and frustrating but it is so beautiful. This book shows the resilience of humanity and the power of pure love.
Lo and Alyssa are brilliant. Best friends turned to lovers is a beautiful theme and this book nailed it. The heavy themes of drugs and abuse, both mental and physical, can be hard to swallow at times. You begin to grieve and celebrate with these two main characters, which creates a bond, making you want to fight for them too. Their young love is born out of a friendship that is sweet and solid. Yet mistakes are made and feelings are hurt. When they get a second chance it is messy and at times I wondered if together was better. But when that thought came to mind, I knew without a doubt that together was the only way. Their connection was deep and something that could not be ignored, no matter what they thought or did.
This book has a fantastic set of secondary characters, both the good ones and the bad ones. Each person you meet in this story carries significance and helps enhance what you read. There are the villains of the story, the ones who attempt to destroy with words and actions. But then there are the ones who stand tall in hope and pure friendship, giving our main characters something to hold onto. The book focuses primarily on Lo and Alyssa in the beginning, such as young love is, but when time passes it becomes a bigger story of fight and family that I absolutely adored.
All that rambling to say, this book is wonderful. It is harsh and beautiful. There are themes that share the ugliness of humanity and the brutal reality of so many people in the world today, but Brittainy takes that ugliness and allows hope to be the antidote and love the balm that heals. Brittainy was an author I found by chance but one that I will continue to read by absolute joyful choice. Her stories might break my heart but her emotion and love always puts it back together again.

“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”
It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.
But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.
We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.
Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.
Brittainy Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath. She graduated from Carroll University with a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Creative Writing. She loves to take part in writing screenplays, acting, and dancing–poorly of course. Coffee, chai tea, and wine are three things that she thinks every person should partake in! Brittainy lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her family. When she’s not running a million errands and crafting stories, she’s probably playing with her adorable pets.
