One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who’s forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He’s not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy…and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she’d ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she’s done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she’ll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate’s given him a shot at redemption, he’s determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton…well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

tina thoughts a review for you

The Natural History of Us is a story of two young people who had it all once, lost it, and long for a connection once again. This book is what a young adult, coming of age type romance should be. It is sweet, kind, and shows the ups and downs of learning how to love and be loved. Justin and his flirty ways are something that Peyton cannot ignore, both then and now. I loved how these two interacted and how situations in the present are given depth and meaning through flashbacks into the past. Rachel Harris does a fantastic job of sharing their story and making it real and a bit raw.  Jumping from the time before the “incident” during Freshman year and then back to the end of Senior year when they are forced to reconnect allows the reader to quickly grasp that something dramatic has happened and it has estranged these two characters, two people who obviously have many unresolved feelings, both negative and positive.

Justin is the jock who broke her heart and Peyton is the girl he can never forget. Peyton is the girl who put it all on the line and Justin is the one who ruined her heart. This story is like the second chance they never saw coming and the reader longs to watch happen. Experiencing  the story as it unfolds in present day and in the past gives the reader a broad spectrum, allowing us to understand what happened, who they were then, and who they are 3 years later. Second chances are my favorite and this young love story is sweet enough to give you a tooth ache. It deals with issues that you expected and some you don’t. As the history unfolds and you understand how it all went down, I was a bit shocked. I knew something had to have happened but did not anticipate what actually had happened. Rachel Harris does a great job of allowing the reader to celebrate and mourn with the main characters. There were times when I thought that maybe this subject matter was too mature but then when I took a step back I realized it would have been when I was their age. Now it is something that is normal and real for this generation. There is deception and heartache. There is family and friendship. Justin and Peyton show different sides of the spectrum but their interactions and lives blend beautifully.  I loved seeing how they seem like night and day but, at the risk of sounding cheesy, they are two halves of a soul. They were just too young to understand what that meant.

If you love sweet and heartfelt YA stories, this one if for you. It is a wonderful balance of young love, romance, reality, and family. Justin and Peyton are two characters that are fun to read about and so obviously meant for one another. Their story is great balance of sweet and real, giving the reader something to cheer on and experience.
