When I finished reading Forgetting August, talk about a cliffhanger punch to the gut. I was all in an uproar, having been sucked in deep and not seeing the cliff coming. So naturally, I was beyond excited to get my hands on Remembering Everly, the conclusion to the duet, hoping Berg would be kind and settle my poor heart. And did she ever! This was the best conclusion for August and Everly. I was hesitant to see where things were headed but went in guns blazing, excited to see what happened.
One thing I loved about this book was the way it flowed from beginning to end. At the beginning we see Ryan and Everly planning their wedding, all the while showing Everly slowly cracking under the pressure and the fact she is not being true to herself. I feel like this whole scenario could have been messy and overly angsty. Yet Berg takes the situation and makes it uncharacteristically simple and brilliant. Truth, trust, and love are foundational to this book. There are so many kinds of love. There is the forever kind, the friend kind, and the ugly kind. The story flows from one reality to the next new one, always being justified in the characters choices and experiences. It is natural and allowed for anticipation to build.
Everly and August are great! August’s character beings to transform even more in this book. We learn what happened in the past both through his memories and Everly’s experiences. It adds a vital twist to what happened, allowing Everly and the reader to see what went down and understand everything in a new light. These key moments transform what we all had come to expect, giving us, along with Everly a new understanding of August and his reactions. Both characters grow so much in this book. August learns to trust both himself and Everly. Everly learns to stand up and chase what she wants and protect those she cares about. Seeing where these two were in the very beginning and then in the end, you cannot help but admire the way Berg molds these two into something real and strong.
One theme that is hinted at in the first book that comes out in this one is the reality of the danger Everly and August are in. The book kicks up a notch from an emotional love story to something dripping with suspense and hostility. Watching the story and danger unfold was great and it adds a new element to the book that grows into a situation that bonds our main characters. It added just the right amount of intrigue without weighing the story down.
This duet is brilliant. Ausgust and Everly are some of Berg’s best characters, sharing a story that is full of heart and choice. I loved the community and expectations Berg built in this duet. Not only was it well written and beautiful, it shows the worst of a situation and you still cannot help but feel the hope of something more.
