How far will one man go for the woman he’s loved since high school?

Jamie Kingston has been Brynn Chandler’s best friend since middle school. Only once was their friendship tested—when Brynn gave Jamie a single kiss. Since then, they’ve had an unspoken agreement never to cross that line again, and she’s ready to let go of the past and move on.

But Jamie has loved Brynn for as long as he can remember, and now that he’s ready to tell her, she has her sights set on someone else. Knowing this is his last chance, he asks Brynn to go on a two-week road trip. But their time alone brings old hurts to the surface, and Brynn has to decide if the one that got away lies at the end of the journey or if he’s been by her side all along.

tina thoughts a review for you

AJ Pine, I bow to your brilliance! This book was everything I wanted. It shares the depth and emotion of a friends to lovers romance, while weaving in some of my other favorite themes. The One That Got Away breathes new life into the storyline presented and shares a tale that will tug at your heartstrings. Jamie and Byrnn’s story is ripe with angst and deep seated emotions, giving the reader something to hold onto when you read this book! There is a deep connection between these two and it has the power to grow into the forever kind of love if they would just get out of their own way.

The themes in this book were the first things that made me fall in love with this story. I love friends to lovers and second chance stories. I also love road trip books, another theme that happens. The setting of the Kingston Ale House and then the wide open road sets this book up to be wonderful. Pine creates a world that is in depth and bright, giving the reader an understanding of what is happening in such a way that you being to hope and cheer for Brynn and Jamie from page one. The love story between these two is a burn that consumes when it is finally acknowledged. It was interesting and very frustrating to watch their lack of communication and ever growing secrets keep their moment at bay. And when it happens, it is an explosion of passion and pent up feelings thrown all over the place.

If this is how the series starts out, I cannot wait for more. The world shared by Pine shares a story people can connect to and leaves you hoping with all your heart for their happily ever after. It creates a world that is both relatable and new. I am ready for many more books in the series and excited to learn about the people we met in this first installment! Each secondary character was fun and vital to what was happening and I cannot help but hope they all get their own book!
