I was very curious about what Into the Nothing had in store for the book world. I loved A Lover’s Lament for it’s raw and gritty story of love and heartache. So, naturally, I was excited to see what BT created with his solo debut story. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I don’t know if I really had any expectations per say, but this book blew me out of the water and took me in a much different direction than I would have imagined. The writing is great. The flow of the story works very well and carries the reader from one scene to another. It was interesting to read a male authors writing through a female POV. BT did a fabulous job of giving the reader meat to the bones of the story in each POV and building the book well.
This one was much more melancholy than I anticipated. Obviously it is not all rainbows and butterflies, but I had been reading rom coms lately and to jump into this left book me a bit sad in the end. When you read the synopsis you understand that something terrible happened but I don’t think I was ready for what was coming. I appreciated how this story is set up. It starts in present day with Xander in jail, giving us a brief glimpse into his present reality and then gives us the “facts” according to the police statement to the reader. From there we jump back 2 months to see where it all began. I loved that the story is structured in this way. It takes on a new quality of suspense and mystery, making you wonder if Xander is telling the truth and if he is, who is the real killer? BT does a good job of keeping the reader guessing. I jumped from suspect to suspect throughout the story. You are curious about what will happen to everyone you meet in this book and wondering if they will have a happy ending or not.
Into the Nothing is hard to categorize. It is a mystery filled with suspense; it is romantic story; and it is a contemporary tale. It blends everything into a book that stands out; one that has the capability of drawing you in. Certain parts of the story are hard to digest and other moments are sweet as can be. There is a full gambit of emotion to experience and I was left reeling in the end. I am very curious about what BT has in store for this series and I am excited to see what is next.
“How about twenty questions?” I ask.”I hate twenty questions.””How about five questions, then?”He cracks a smile and lifts an eyebrow. “How about three?”
“Deal!”
“So, have I mentioned how much I fucking hate Tuesdays?” Brandi’s voice cuts right between us. Xander looks relieved.
Me? Not so much. “Damn it, Brandi!”
“What?”
“Oh nothing. Can you grab me Fireball though? Pretty please. Two of them.” I look at Xander. “You’re taking one.”
“Three. I am too, bitch! Fuck Tuesdays!” Brandi calls out from across the bar as she begins filling the shot glasses from the Fireball chiller.
“Question one. You said you’ve been traveling for a while now, right? Do you ever get tired of it? Ever feel like settling?”
“Damn. Starting out with the heavy hitters, huh?” He eyes the shot glasses as if hoping it will somehow make them fill faster.
“Need me to go easier on you? Maybe a finger or two first before I go in with the whole fist?”
He looks at me in disbelief. “Did you really just say that?”
“Just answer the question, two fingers or three?”
