I am a HUGE fan of everything Nichole Chase has written. She snagged my heart with Suddenly Royal and it has been a love affair with her stories ever since. It feels like it has been ages since Chase has given the world something new but let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Bedmates is everything I expect from Chase with the good ole dose of American fascination with the First family of the USA. Maddie and Jake are a couple that will make you smile and their story will steal your heart.
I am a sucker for books like this. The First daughter falls in love and it is perfection. Chase does an incredible job of balancing a young woman’s attempt to find who she is, standing on her own two feet, with the duty she has to her family and country. It is a strenuous balance and it is well developed in each situation and emotion you encounter. I loved Maddie’s character so much. She is witty, kind, hopeful, and determined. She fits right in with Chase’s many heroines, a woman who we can admire and cheer for. Jake and his relationship with Maddie is brilliant. This man has been to hell and back, coming home someone different. I wish I could have seen more of who he was before war changed him. The glimpses we see of their shared history paints Jake as a brat but endearing none the less. I loved the obvious history between Maddie and Jake. These two are well oiled in how they dance around each other but adding in the burning attraction and growing emotion adds something refreshing and beautiful to their relationship.
This book is everything. There are moments of happiness and romance, as well as moments of sorrow and pain. Chase does a wonderful job of blending everything together in a story that flows from beginning to end. Reading the story in dual POVs gives the reader a much more in depth story to enjoy. We understand Jake’s struggle to readjust and deal with his demons, as well as Maddie’s desire to help him be free. Every single thing that happens makes complete sense and flows with where Maddie and Jake are. There are highs and lows in every relationship we observe. Add to that the constant pressure of the spotlight of being in the White House and you have a birds eye view into a different fascinating world. Bedmates is fantastic in its themes and characters but also in the details. Everything happens for a reason and every reason takes the reader deeper into Maddie and Jake’s story.
For fans of the Suddenly Royal series, we see some old faces, something I REALLY loved. Getting to see where some of my favorites are now was the proverbial icing on the cake I was happily stuffing my face with. I don’t think I can sing this book’s praises any louder. Fans of Nichole Chase’s style will fall head over heels, devouring this story one brilliant word at a time. The wait has already been forgotten (and was most definitely worth it) and I am anxiously counting down the days till I get more American royalty. Bedmates is not to be missed.
“Have you been crying?” Warm fingers touched my cheek and I jerked in surprise at the sparks that danced through my blood. I couldn’t remember if he had ever touched me except for obligatory dances at celebrations and fund- raisers. “What happened? Are you okay?”
“No, I’m fine.” I stepped out of his reach and rubbed under my eyes. Tearing my gaze from his I leaned over and picked up his cane. “It’s allergies.”
“We’ve known each other too long for you to lie to me.” He let his hand fall back to his side. I handed him the cane and stepped back. “Someone told you that I was on my way, huh? We all know how much you hate me. I’m surprised you didn’t jump out of the window.”
“It was an option.” I rolled my eyes. I guess I wasn’t the only one that remembered our last meeting hadn’t been pleasant. “I also considered hiding in the closet, but was too slow.”
There! Take that, perfect Jake Simmon. I was quick on my feet today.
“So, you know why I’m here.” The way his eyes ran over me as if taking stock was obnoxious.
“I’m your body guard. When the crazy women start running after you, I’m to dive in the way.” And damn if they wouldn’t come running when they saw how he looked all grown up and rough around the edges.
“I’m glad they have a plan.” He scratched his chin. “Getting bombarded with underwear and bras is a health issue.”
“If they got to know you, it wouldn’t be a problem.” I rolled my eyes.
“What does that mean?” His head cocked to the side.
“I thought you lost your leg, not your brain.” My eyes widened, but it was too late to take it back. Why was it that I said the most horrible things around him? Even when we’d been younger I’d had diarrhea of the mouth. Especially around Jake.
He threw his head back and laughed. “I don’t think they’re after my brain, Maddie. Thankfully the part they’re most interested in is still fully functional.”
His lazy smile and sparkling eyes had me swallowing hard.
Heat crept up my neck and I fought to not look away. “Well, good for you.”
