His larger-than-life personality fascinates her, but also shakes the foundations of her quiet, introverted self, knocking her off-kilter. It’s a bad idea to let him take her on as a weight-loss client. It’s an even worse idea to get involved with him since he’s her manwhore roommate…and she’s seen him in action.
If they give into their undeniable attraction, is it just a train wreck waiting to happen? Or will their desire fuel a chance at real love?

When I first started to read this story, I was a bit worried about how well McAdam would be able to address all the themes she presented in this book. She introduces abuse, alcoholism, addiction, new starts, obesity, and self-loathing/self-love. There is love between two people and learning to love yourself. So many different things come together to create this story and McAdams does a pretty good job of presenting it all to her readers, giving them a story to dive head first into.
The Ground Beneath our Feet is a much deeper story than I anticipated. The author’s courage to address body image is a theme that I loved in this book. Watching Jessica learn to embrace who she is, is a broken and beautiful story. In a world with skewed beauty standards, it was heartfelt to read a tale about a woman who deals with those issues and her journey to learn to love herself. I know that this book is a love story between a man and a woman, but Jessica is the shining light. So many different people will be able to identify with her struggles, woman of every shape, culture, and lifestyle. There were moments when my heart ached for her struggles and other moments I would fist bump the air, knowing she was going to make it after all.
McAdam takes a love story and makes it great with her character development. The love between Jessica and Mickey is passionate and eye opening. Their journey together is rivaled by their journey to individual self discovery. The heart of this story is alive and fighting till the very last moment. Don’t miss it!

Leslie McAdam is a California girl who loves romance, Little Dude, and well-defined abs. She lives in a drafty old farmhouse on a small orange tree farm in Southern California with her husband and two small children. Leslie always encourages her kids to be themselves – even if it means letting her daughter wear leopard print from head to toe. An avid reader from a young age, she will always trade watching TV for reading a book, unless it’s Top Gear. Or football. Leslie is employed by day but spends her nights writing about the men you fantasize about. She’s unapologetically sarcastic and notoriously terrible at comma placement (that’s what editors are for!). Always up for a laugh, Leslie tries to see humor in all things. When she’s not in the writing cave you’ll find her fangirling over Beck, camping with her family, or mixing up oil paints to depict her love of outdoors on canvas.
