Black Hearts is a BRAND NEW STANDALONE DUET – the second book and conclusion, Dirty Souls, releases March 17th.
For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back.
What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too?
Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.
But it’s a love with tragic consequences.
Both the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives.
Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.
And they’ll be paying the price with their souls.
The Sins & Needles series was the first thing I ever read from Karina Halle. It blew my mind. I loved the suspense, the danger, and the hot chemistry. When I learned that The Sins Duet is more in the world she created, I couldn’t get me hands on this series fast enough. You don’t need to have read the Sins & Needles series to enjoy this new release (although it definitely adds something extra). This story takes place 20 years or so after the previous series ends. It features the children of Ellie, Camden, and Javier, a new twisting tale of something sinister and very intriguing.
Violet and Vicente are brilliant. These two are so seemingly different, two people from very different worlds that are looking for the same thing, their purpose in live. Violet is a fascinating character. She is a dichotomy of everything good in the world that is on the edge of everything that is bad and evil. This woman is a deep and feeling woman. I loved getting to see the world through her eyes. Her sensitivity and intuition is such an important part of this story. Vicente is her opposite. He is confident, smooth, and dark. He is duplicitous and draws Violet into something dark and lust filled. When these two come together, there is an explosion of passion and darkness.
One of my favorite parts about this book is that we see the story unfold via different POVs. We see it all through Violet, Vicente, Javier, and Ellie’s POV. This adds even more depth and mystery into the book. So many moving parts that are bound to converge in a brilliant and sinister way. There are so many different “what ifs” and “WTFs” floating around this story, allowing it to have the power to go anywhere. Despite the fact I was not ready for the end of this book, I am excited for what comes next. Literally anything could happen. True motives will be laid bare and truth will come out. I cannot wait to see what kind of chaos it brings and how it affects them all in the end.
