Ann Aguirre’s 2B Trilogy started off great with Nadia and Ty’s story, I Want It That Way, but As Long As You Love Me blew me away moving to my favorite in the series by far!! This book was fantastic. It reversed stereotypes and took a bit of a spin on the New Adult. It felt like a unique story in the long line up of NA romance of today.
Lauren was kicked out of college because her grades were so terrible and she lost her scholarship forcing her to move back home. What most people in her life don’t understand is that she wanted to go home and letting her grades slip was just a way of making that happen. She was someone she didn’t want to be while away at school and after a series of unpleasant events, leaving was the only way to keep her head straight and survive. When she gets home, she moves back in with her mom and decides to find a job and take online classes. While at the supermarket a few days after coming home she runs into Rob, Nadia’s brother and the object of Lauren’s life long crush that was held onto over the years. They begin to hang out and their friendship blooms, creating a support and connection that both desperately need. It soon escalates into something so much more, causing both to evaluate what it is they want in their future and if they can make it work.
There were several key things that made me fall in love with this story. First off, the characters were fantastic. Lauren was fun, flirty and feisty. She was smart, her brain working in ways many peoples couldn’t comprehend. She was beautiful. She was funny and kind. Despite her anxieties and fears, she was able to embrace life and Chase after what she wanted.
My favorite character was Rob. He was sweet, kind, humble and sexy! This character defied the stereotypes of the many make leads today. His insecurities and misgivings in regards to his work and who he was really surprised me. For his whole life he seemed to fall short of some standard he was meant to achieve. He was valued for his incredible looks and written off as nothing more than a dumb jock. It was fascinating to see the world through his perspective. To see his insecurities and the hurt he carried in his life, thinking her was never good enough or smart enough to accomplish his dreams and make a difference. When he would function in that mindset and people encouraged him to do so, it was sad to see how he accepted his lacking as fact, when in reality he had so much to give.
When you put Rob and Lauren together it was a fusion of unsuspecting equality, where each person brought their insecurities and strengths to the table, balancing each other out and offering exactly what the other needed. I appreciated Rob’s moral compass in not pursuing Lauren till his relationship ended. I loved how they took their history and created a future for themselves. They were a perfect complement couple, encouraging each other and helping each other through their insecurities and issues.
Ann writes a story with a fluidity and movement that the reader cannot help but be swept away by. It was the perfect amount of emotions and storytelling to draw in the reader. Rob and Lauren have great chemistry. The secondary characters add even more meat to the bones of this story! Lauren’s relationship with Avery was unexpected but I loved it!
This story took me by surprise and raised the bar high for Max’s story, the last book in the 2B Trilogy. As Long As You Love Me was fun, sexy, sweet, with the right amount of heartbreak and angst to make it a book that needs to be read and loved by New Adult fans!
