Burying Water finalThe top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-2
Jane Doe
Now

I close my eyes as a tear slips out from the corner of one eye, the salt from it burning my sensitive skin. Why did this happen to me? Who could have done such a thing?
Raped . . . STDs . . . “What about . . . I mean, could I be pregnant?” The question slips out unbidden.
True to her promise, Dr. Alwood quickly readjusts my gown and covers. Peeling off her gloves, she tosses them in the trash bin and then takes a seat on the edge of my bed. “We can certainly rule that out from the rape.” She pauses. “Because you were already pregnant when you were brought in.”
The air sails from my lungs as she delivers yet another harsh punch of news. My gaze drifts to my flat abdomen. I have a baby in there?
“You were about ten weeks along.”
Were. Past tense.
“Do you not recall any of this?” Dr. Alwood’s brows draw together as she watches me closely.
A soft “no” slips out and I can’t help but feel that she doesn’t believe me.
“Well, given your extensive injuries, it is not at all surprising that you miscarried. You’re lucky to be alive, as it is.” She hesitates before she adds, “I don’t think that whoever did this to you intended for you to survive.”
A strange cold sweeps through my limbs as I take in the ruined body lying on this bed before me. I’ve been lucid for all of five minutes—the long hand on the clock ahead tells me that—and in that short time, this doctor has informed me that I was beaten, raped, . . . and left for dead.
And I lost a baby I don’t ever remember carrying, or making.
I don’t know who the father was.
I don’t even know who I am.
“I’m going to send you for another CT scan and MRI.” I feel the weight of her gaze on me. “Are you sure there isn’t someone or something that you remember? A husband? Or a boyfriend? Or a sibling? A parent? Maybe a city where you grew up? The hospital would like to find your family for you.”
Her barrage of questions only makes my heart rate spike and the annoying EKG ramp up again. I can’t answer a single one of them. Is anyone missing me right now? Are they searching for me? Am I from Bend, Oregon or do I live somewhere else?
Dr. Alwood sits quietly, waiting, as I focus on a small yellow splotch on the ceiling. That’s water damage. How can I recognize that and not my own name?
“Even a tiny detail?” she presses, the urgency in her voice soft and pleading.
“No.” There’s nothing.
I remember nothing at all.

Tina's Thoughts... A review for youK.A. Tucker is an incredibly gifted author. She is a master of words; an artist who can paint such vivid and deep emotions like few authors can. The Ten Tiny Breaths series is a testament to this fact and BURYING WATER is another step in that wonderful direction. The story begins with a prologue in which we see a frantic Jesse trying to get to the woman he loves in time, in hopes of saving her life. When he finds her, she is so badly beaten and mauled that he is sure she is dead. Yet she takes a shuddering breath and hope sparks again in his heart. This is the beginning of a story filled with love, healing and life, one which will consume your mind completely!

When the book starts we pace back and forth between Jane Doe/Water’s POV in the present day and Jesse’s POV in the past. Jane Doe is struggling to put the pieces of her life together again, searching for even a glimpse of who she was and where she came from. Her body is starting the long and painful process of healing, yet this experience will leave scars both physically and emotionally that cannot be hidden. She is taken under the wing of Ginny Fitzgerald, a cantankerous old lady, and the Alwoods. She is trying to start over and find out who she is now. With the flashback chapters to the past, we begin to understand more about Jesse, who he is and how he fell in love with a girl up North. I don’t want to give much away with the plot line but it is fabulous!!

When the story first began, I had a hard time adjusting to the time hops, one chapter in the present with Water and one chapter in the past with Jesse. I started and had to stop to find a quiet and isolated place to dive into this story. It required my complete focus and I was well rewarded for that focus. After a few chapters the story began to piece itself together. From the very first word in the prologue, you take a step off the proverbial cliff and free fall until the very last sentence of the epilogue. It is an emotional journey of healing, hope and new life. It is a raw and passionate tale of two people who fall in love and make the decision to do what it takes to be together, which ultimately could be their downfall. I was a little uneasy about the romance between Jesse and Alex at first. She is married and that theme is not one of my favorites to read about. However, as the reader you are drawn into a world of “grey,” where nothing is truly as it seems and things are more complicated than you know. Water is a beautiful soul. She is continually searching to find herself and allowing her body and mind to heal. She is a complex character, one that I loved and cherished in my heart. Jesse is a lover and a fighter, willing to do what it takes to protect those he loves but knowing when to step back and allow things to happen. The supporting cast of characters from Ginny to Gabe, Meredith and Amber are vital to the book. All of those characters create a deep and rich storyline that will have you crying and laughing. There were moments of such sorrow and pain that you cannot help but have tears in your eyes. But there are also so many moments of joy and life that bring a smile to your face. This book holistically encompasses the idea that it takes experiencing the lowest of lows to truly understand and joyously embrace the moments of triumph and bliss.

This book will leave you shattered for days but in the best way possible. You will feel deeply and completely. The characters and emotions cannot help but attach their heartstrings to yours and take you on a joinery that will not easily be forgotten. If you have not had a chance to grab your copy of BURYING WATER yet, then do it now! But make sure to grab a box of tissues as well! K.A.
