Tina's Thoughts... A review for you

The Redemption is not your typical love story in any form or fashion. It is a tale of two very broken people learning how to love each other, because being together makes their lives and hearts whole again. When the story begins, Rochelle is mourning the death of her husband Cory, who tragically died in a plane crash. She is devastated and heart broken. Her soulmate was ripped from this world too soon and she is left with his memory and two boys to raise. As she grieves, friends and family come around to support. One such person who supports her from afar is Dex, the drummer from The Resistance, someone that has known Rochelle for many years. In a moment filled with loneliness and grief, Dex and Rochelle have a passionate one night affair that ends in hurt, confusion, and guilt. This one night triggers a series of events that starts a roller coaster of emotions for Dex and Rochelle. It seems like timing is never right or one person knows better than the other. They both continue to hurt each other, wondering if they should be together at all. There are highs and lows but one thing is for certain, when they are together in their own Neverland, time stands still and it is perfect. They are able to see straight to the heart of one another and life makes sense.

Rochelle was an incredibly strong woman and mother. Her husband died right after she gave birth to her second son. She grieves deeply and feels the loss in every fiber of her being. She is a wonderful mother to Neil and CJ. She is an active participant in their lives, choosing to love them and support them in any and every way. The grieving process we read in this story is raw and heart breaking. Rochelle and Cory were so in love. Their passion and connection was deep. He was taken away too young and so abruptly. This shocking separation would cause anyone massive grief and Rochelle is no exception. She attempts to trudge though her life with her head held high and her boys by her side, attempting to balance her present reality with her heart and mind so constantly reaching for the past she can never quite grasp onto. She must learn what it means to live again, to be happy in spite of what happened, and allow love to bloom again no matter what people may think and say.

Dex is such an interesting character. He was complex and broken in such a way that all I wanted to do was hold him and affirm him. His childhood was broken, he lost his focus and way at such an early age, proving that money doesn’t solve anything. He is a drug user, a flirt, and an all around typical bad boy musician. Yet when he begins to allow Rochelle and the boys deeper into his life and heart, you are able to see beyond the glorified facade to a man who is broken and longing for love and purpose. He has loved Rochelle since the first day he met her when he was 19. His feelings are deep yet his mind is warped to believe that he needs to change and be perfect for her. Granted he has issues he needed to work out but it was difficult for him to grasp that she could love every part of who he was. He was moody, lashing out constantly and making poor choices. Yet he was kind, loving, understanding and great with the kids. Dex was such an incredibly deep character, one that displayed many different angles and desires.

Watching these two fall in love was quite a frustrating yet gratifying event. Their passion was explosive but this book shows that more than a a physical and chemical connection is needed. The constant push and pull was aggravating yet it never seemed to be the right time. There was so much they had to learn about each other. They needed to heal in so many ways individually before they could even contemplate what it would mean to grow together. During this process, they would lash out in hurt or anger, causing a rift that seemed to wide to overcome. Yet they would always find their way back to each other. Their journey takes years but it allows for true healing and forgiveness to take place.

I felt emotionally exhausted yet content after reading this book. It is an deep story filled with so many highs and lows. Yet when two broken people come together, you are bound to have heartache and confusion. With Rochelle and Dex we see the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is not always pretty but until then, they learned how to trudge through the ugliness of life to find where they belong: together. This book was a story of second, third, and fourth chances- a story of the many facets of life that could make or break any person. Rochelle and Dex’s story was deeper than a love story. It was a story of healing, forgiveness, redemption, hope and new life. They had to reach the lowest of the lows in order to shoot back up into the stars.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-2

I pull my hand away slowly, leaving all the feelings we were developing behind in the palm of his hand. “The timing is wrong.”

“Bullshit!”

Startled, I jump in my seat.

Lowering his voice, he says, “That’s a cop out. I know you feel something for me. I see how you react because I also feel it when I’m around you. There’s something here and you’re just scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“Scared to have a life without Cory and thinking you have to justify it to others. The problem with that is that when you start justifying it, it will make you feel like your love for Cory was less. It wasn’t. It’s just different. He’s not here, Rochelle.”

“Stop it. Stop talking about Cory and take me home.”

“Now you want to stop talking about him?” He looks surprised. “I can’t win with you when it comes to him.” He shifts the car into drive.

“This is not a competition, Dex.”

Disappointment slides onto his face. “Then why is he being shoved in my face every time we make a move?”

“This is one of the reasons why we won’t work. We see things very differently.”

“One of the reasons? Name another because from where I sit, we fit like two puzzle pieces clicking together.”

“You’re a supposed recovering addict. You have sex with anyone who offers.

“That’s it. Right there. You play like you know who I am, but you don’t. That’s why the lies are so easily believed. I can tell what you’re doing. You’re giving me an out that I don’t want. You’re allowing yourself to believe the worst about me to ease your conscience, but it won’t—”

“You know what? Not everything is about you and your past. You lost a band mate and friend, but I lost my soulmate!”
