There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you’re good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

Seventeen. Single. Dad.
That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug…
And you become her poison.

Kick Push teaser

tina's thoughtsI fell in love with Jay McLean’s writing when I read Where The Road Takes Me. I am a sucker for road trip stories and this one knocked it out of the park. I loved every character we met in this story and the depth they added to what was happening. One of these brilliant secondary characters was Josh Warden, the teenage dad who gave it all up to raise his son. When I found out that Kick Push was his story,  I was greedy Gary, just trying to get my hands on this book, Let me tell you, Jay delivered. Kick Push is a powerful story of love, family, sacrifice, and second chances. It weaves such a tragic yet beautiful story into one that will stop your heart and touch your soul.

Kick Push tells us the past and present of Josh Warden and his precious son Tommy. This story tells us of the ups and downs of what Josh’s life was like and the successful young man he has become due to the love and support of a stranger. Josh is an incredible character. He is a young man of responsibility, love, integrity, and a fabulous father. He has faced the worse of humanity when he is abandoned by those he loves, but he decides that his love for Tommy will be unconditional and they can make it together. Jay does an incredible job of blending this story with the reality of his situation. He is a teenage dad and it sucks at times. His life is hard and those hardships are unbearable in the beginning. It was heart breaking to see him struggle but that makes the wins and the high moments so much sweeter and better. Tommy is precious, a young boy loved more than many with a full family might ever be. He is sweet and smart, a kid that is intuitive and creative. I loved his sweet moments with Josh and Becca, melting my heart because of his adorable ways!

When Becca first enters the scene, I was curious to see what would happen in her interactions with Tommy and Josh. It was fascinating to watch her acclimate to her new life and to begin to heal from past trauma. I was a bit worried that Becca’s past might take over the story. With two such intense themes such as teenage parents and abuse, there is a fine line to fuse the two together and still make for a story that is hopeful and healing despite the dark ugliness. Jay proves her skills by being able to show the realities of the situations each character finds themselves in while infusing the situations with hope. Becca is so broken that at times it was hard to read her story, to witness the horrors of her life. It is incredible that she can open her heart at all after her past but it is a delicate life she leads, always teetering on edge of breaking past the point of return. I appreciated that Jay showed that she had to heal for herself and not someone else. It is so easy in books for the person to change for someone else they love or fall in love with but the realization that she had to want it for herself was profound in this story.

This story will break your heart in the absolute best possible way. There is heartache, hurt, and betrayal. But there is also unconditional love, healing, and forgiveness. When you have read so many books you sometimes disconnect with what is happening and your heart is a bit hardened to the story in general. Not with Kick Push. You cannot help but feel the emotion leaping off the page as it burrows deep into your soul. This story is real in its valleys and peaks, one that will leave you breathless in the end. I am excited to see where the big picture story leads and what Jay has in store for Josh, Becca, and Tommy!
