REVIEW: Igniting Ash by M.A Stacie

 IGNITING ASH
M.A. Stacie
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 4, 2015
Limitless Publishing

After a terrible start in life, Asher Harris picks himself up and manages to carve out a fairly decent future. Content with living alone in his bookshop, he shies away from relationships and keeps trust to a minimum. Emma Carnes hasn’t seen Asher in years, though she’s never forgotten him. Their one interaction as teenagers became pivotal to them both. It gave her a career.

It saved his life.

Emma saw things about Asher that nobody else did. When she urged him to escape a perilous situation, it turned her toward her purpose in life…and saved Asher. Intrigued by the strong man he’s become, she gently persuades him to open up, but finds his emotional walls hard to climb. She also hopes for his help with a troubled teen, Gabe Dearing, who reminds her very much of Asher himself.

Their relationship and ties to Gabe threaten to reveal things someone wants to keep hidden…

Someone is watching Emma, trying to figure out what she knows, and she soon senses something isn’t right. When the bookshop is vandalized and Gabe disappears, only to return bloody, broken, and refusing to say what happened, Asher and Emma search for the truth as their passion intensifies.

The danger mounts, and Emma and Ash struggle to keep what they’ve fought so hard to gain.

But can he save Emma as she saved him so long ago?

Or will a dark and violent history repeat itself and destroy them all?

tina's thoughts doodlesackIgniting Ash is a book that wowed me. This book took the iconic troubled bad boy to another level, adding depth, emotion, and an authenticity that enhanced the story. The story focuses primarily on a few characters. First is Ash, the man who has grown from a boy who was abused and abandoned. Second is Emma, the girl who did a small kindness that saved his life in the past that grew into a woman with a cause. Last is Gabe, the boy who reminds Emma of Ash and her mission to protect him at all costs. These three characters are woven into a story of love, life, reality, and heartbreak. There are moments of beauty and life in this story but the reality of so many situations allows the ugliness of the world around them to bleed into what they cherish. It is beautiful to see how Stacie takes some heartbreaking themes and gives the reader an emotional ride, tinged with sadness, anger, and hope.

What made this story for me was Ash and his relationships. The bad boy and the tortured soul is a characteristic that I see all the time in books. It adds drama, depth, and emotion to stories. Yet so often it is dramatized in such a way that the reality of their emotional issues’ are overlooked in favor of a quick fix with love or instant personality transformation. Ash’s story is sad. It is the story of so many young people today; a story of abuse, anger, desperation, and hurt. His life was rough but he made it through to be a man living his life on his own terms. The difference is that he deals with his demons. He is haunted by what has happened, the main reason he is isolated in life. His struggle is authentic and raw. You feel his desperation and pain, as well as his hope and fear of what is good and kind. His past is a huge factor in this story and it is a theme that affected his relationships, especially those with Emma and Gabe.

Emma is a strong woman that has a heart the size of Africa. She is a determined person, one willing to take the steps to find a solution and bring hope and love in the process. Watching her connect with Gabe is powerful. She opens her heart to him and eventually he responds, albeit at a slow pace. Emma’s tenacity with Ash allows for him to begin healing and chipping away at the anger and hurt from the past, learning to love and let it all go. It is not always a pretty story- there are times when self-preservation kicks in and hurt follows. This story is not all rainbows and butterflies. That right there is what makes is beautiful. There is such a beauty in the pain and brokenness. Watching Emma and Ash fall in love was different. We see a passion and attraction that is obvious but the connection is slow to grow on Ash’s end due to fear from his past and who he has grown to be.

Emma works with troubled youth, those who are abused, abandoned, and living on the street. She sees the hope that they cannot and attempts to make that hope a reality. Her job is  a noble one, inspired by Ash and I loved it. Gabe is a boy who comes in broken and beaten. It breaks your heart to see what he goes through yet he always comes back to his new refuge when it is too much. As his story progresses, you learn more of who he is and his personality, so much like Ash. Gabe’s journey to being set free from a bad situation is one that is compelling. It is one of hope. His relationship with Ash is on a special level that adds depth to their storyline. Seeing where he is in the beginning and where he is in the end is something amazing to read.

There is so much I loved that I could go on and on. I loved the relationship and passion between Emma and Ash. I loved seeing them work things out and strive together for a future. There is drama galore but only the best kind. There is a level of suspense that adds to this story and when it comes to a point, it is explosive and somewhat shocking. Needless to say, I plan to check out what Stacei has been up to! This book was a top read for me and I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for the world.
