Looking back, I am not sure what exactly I expected from this story, but this was not it. Always Room for Cupcakes is a brilliant blending of comedy, romance, and suspense. Bethany Lopez does a great job of blending those three elements into a story that keeps the reader engaged.

This book has a fun cast of characters. You have Lila, the divorced mother of two turned PI photographer. There is Cade, the mysterious savior. Let’s not forget Amy May, the best friend/cupcake master, and Moose, the crazy PI boss man. We also have the Douche (aka Lila’s cheating ex) and her adorable twins. This book is not short on fun and meaningful characters, all of which play an important role in Lila’s life. The characters create an engaging story, but what makes this story brilliant is the writing. This book has a lot happening. There are so many things going on but they all blend together so well. There is mystery and intrigue. Couple that with romance and you have a winner. But even more than that, there is a story of a woman who is learning to be un-apologetically who she is and go after what she wants. Lila is a fantastic main character that added icing to the cupcake.

All the thematic elements somehow work really well in this book. The danger and suspense is appropriate. The romance and moments of comedy allow for a breath of fresh air in the book. The danger is real and at times a bit terrifying. Lopez blends everything into a book that is not what the reader expects. Everything balances well and gives us a story that is intriguing and authentic, all the while leaving your craving a cupcake. I loved how no one theme overwhelms the story but instead they all work together to bring the reader a book that is well written and engaging.

Lopez is definitely on my authors to watch. This is my first book from her and it will not be the last. Always Room for Cupcakes  is fantastically written and developed. Her writing is beautiful. If this book is anything like her other books, you can be sure I will just as easily fall in love.
