It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.

But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times―and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.

So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.

Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.

tina thoughts a review for you

It has been a while since I have read a truly angsty Young Adult story. Monica Murphy’s Just Friends takes the cake, combining everything one would expect from the genre in a dramatic high school fashion. This book hits it all: rivalries, dating, hooking up, drugs, alcohol, lust, and lies. This story is told via Liv’s perception and it is true to what a teenage girl would be struggling with in high school. There are boys that break your heart and lead you on. There is confusion and anger. Friends become enemies and those from the wings of life step in and become the ones you lean on.

Murphy does a great job bringing this world to life. It almost seemed a bit overwhelming with EVERYTHING that happens. It is like every single emotion and drama center piece you could imagine in high school takes place to some degree. The writing is fantastic and draws you deep into what is happening. You don’t know who to trust and who is really telling the truth.

The drama could be thought as overwhelming but in reality it is what it is and I am dying to know what happens. Fans of YA and angst with adore this well written story of love and life in high school. Prepare yourself for needing more. I did not realize this was the beginning of a series and that ending. I am ready for more!
