Sigh. Marlo and Ever. Two such broken creatures that are oh so beautiful together. This story has it all. Lust, heartache, pain, passion, second chances, and hope. Reading Low Over High created a backdrop of two people, who they were and what happened in their early years. These two knew young love, a love that left its mark on them both in different ways. Fast forward to many years later and Ever Over After takes place. There are two very different versions of Marlo and Ever. I loved that we get the before and after progression. We see a hardened version of Marlo, a woman who was hurt and violated in so many ways, a woman who has picked up the pieces and made promises to herself. The only one who can make her reevaluate those promises is Ever. They seem like oil and water but when the past is rehashed and moments in the present bring clarity, these two might just make it after all.
DeRouen is a brilliant writer. She evokes emotion by creating a connection between her reader and her characters. Marlo is a woman we can relate to. Ever is someone you can understand. These two have tragedies in their past that pull on your heartstrings. They have promising futures. I loved that hope comes in waves in this story. It is like the pulsing waves of the ocean, getting closer and closer to pulling you into the depths.
Marlo and Ever’s story is not an easy one but the most beautiful stories aren’t always built on something pretty. This tale gives the readers everything they want. There is closure and healing. You see another perspective of what happened then and hope to see things work out now. This duet puts DeRouen’s skills at work and I loved the ending just as much as I hoped I would!
